PixPress Home Page nothalf (converted).gif

PixelPress is a vehicle for small print & web publishing projects which appeal to me. My first project, the book of poetry, Not A Proper Shop, has been well received. Submissions from other writers may be invited from time to time.

Not a Proper Shop was published on 1st December, 1997, and is available from booksellers for $12.95. It may be ordered direct by cheque, money or mail order from my surface mail address for $10.00, post paid.

"Bloody delightful - full of life and characters and
scenery and history - with delightful language that
is always accurate for the subject at hand."

Andrew Burke, poet and critic.

"Walter Vivian's Not A Proper Shop, (Pixel Press, $12.95) is another local product. It is a heart- felt collection disproving the witticism that nostalgia is not what it used to be.His poems on, among other subjects, childhood, the passing landmarks of Perth and its hinterland, demonstrate that nostalgia is very much alive. And in Vivian's work it is a constructive frame of mind. While his poems sometimes evoke a sense of the loss of something genuinely valuable, they are as often celebrations of some of life's most important references -- family and humour, love, the resonances of history in daily living and the beauty of the natural world." Rod Moran in neopoetica, big weekend books, Saturday February 14,1998.

Life is a potted journey of minutiae among the mega events and WA poet Walter Vivian in his anthology, Not a Proper Shop, takes his readers on a gentle, sometimes sentimental, ride through boyhood to burgeoning manhood.
And as interests of the two age groups differ markedly, so to does the poetry.
From simple observations of a young boy on a shopping expedition to the yarn shop with his gran in the title poem, where he waits as patiently as a young boy can to get to the proper shop - "that sold things to eat, and no yarns", to the observing eye and stirring hormones of a young adult. In Swan River By Night, Vivian prods memories and evokes a pre-war Perth that still resonates in our community.
While trying to capture a time and a way of thinking which we think has passed, Vivian's work highlights the strong common thread. Children, especially little boys, still take inordinate interest and delight with their body parts and countless backyards ring with the sound of pirates and Buck Rogers as in Peppercorn Tree - only the names have changed in the interest of progress. And I don't think anyone has told teenagers that there's nothing new under the sun. As slice of local social history, this anthology offers a peek through the half-drawn blinds on characters and situations which still brim with laughter.
Jan Hallam in The Sunday Times, 24 May 1998.

Sappho's Delight, which includes poetry with harder edge, was published 1st April, 1999, and launched on 2nd May, 1999 at Tom Collins Writers Centre. Reviews may be available soon!!!!
It may be ordered direct by cheque, money or mail order from my surface mail address for $10.00, post paid, or through booksellers at $12.95.

How To Make Contact

e-mail: pixpress@iinet.net.au

Please note that text submissions should be sent by and in the body of the e-mail, leaving line spaces between paragraphs.

We publish verse, short stories, first chapters, articles, reviews, news and views, and especially welcome letters and articles on stage and screen.

Graphics such as poem, story or book cover illustrations are also welcome at <http://www.iinet.net.au/~pixpress/ >

Past issues are also available on the site, with 1010 titles by 176+ writers, accessible through the LiveIndex.

We don't pay for contributions as we have no income, but offer exposure to an increasing readership. We are also happy to publish promotional details of contributors' books and forthcoming events of interest to writers. (Writers groups and centres should allow at least four days for copy to be posted.)

We are different because we don't mind re-publishing work that has been published elsewhere, as well as new work and work from new writers. Editorial decisions are made within the three-month publishing period.
